66: System of a Down – ‘Toxicity’.

This album is absolutely brilliant. Everyone loves it, I don’t know anyone that doesn’t love it (I look forward to at least 3 people then telling me they don’t). In many ways, it was the last great album of its era really. I’ve always maintained that ‘Chop Suey’ is the last classic song. Since then, the sheer amount of music available to people has lessened the impact of individual songs, and things that are loved soon become derided and pure nostalgia. ‘Chop Suey’ was the last one to avoid this I think. It was adored when it was released, and it is impossible to claim differently now. My favourite thing about this album though, is the sheer momentum of it. From the opening of ‘Prison Song’ onwards its just bang bang bang, and before you know it, ‘Chop Suey’ is starting and its track 6. A stunning opening blast, if I’m honest. The second half of the album allows a little breathing space, and also provides its best songs. In my opinion, ‘Forest’ is the best song they have ever released. Now THAT is a chorus.

Download: ‘Forest’, ‘Needles’.
