Thursday Thive: Alanis Morissette

1 R, 2 S’s, 2 T’s.

5: ‘Baba’ (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie)
This almost didn’t make it, after I umm-ed and aaah-ed over the merits of ‘Joining You’, but eventually ‘Baba’ got the nod. It’s like Evanescence if they weren’t rubbish, and some of the guitar work in the chorus is joyful.

4: ‘I Was Hoping’ (Alanis Unplugged)
Originally on her 2nd album, it stands up fairly well with that version but it is the MTV Unplugged performance that really stands out. Slow, moody, it sounds like three hours after the aftermath of a car crash in the forest, and still no one has come to help.

3: ‘Forgiven’ (Jagged Little Pill)
Standout song from her first and most successful album, it was the only one that didn’t seem to get released as a single. A skyscraper of a chorus, all manner of bitterness in the lyrics, this is exactly why Alanis Morissette has layers of fans.
2: ‘That I Would Be Good’ (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie)
Aw, good old tenderness. I remember Ffion really liking this song when I was little. I like it more and more every year.

1: ‘Uninvited’
Alanis is in that band of artists where my favourite song of hers is also her best. For the life of me, I cannot understand how anyone is able to disagree with that statement. Everything that made her glorious, the ethereal anger, the vocals sliding across the ceiling, the sneaky good instrumentation, everything comes to a head in this beauty.
