Wrestling is Awesome XXXX: Ax and Smash Start the 1989 Royal Rumble

Posted on January 27, 2014

The Royal Rumble was last night, and it was so-so. Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan stole the show with the opening match, and then the crowd ruled the rest. The Rumble match is always fun, and throughout the years it has produced some more than memorable moments. One of my all time favourites came in 1989, when Demolition tag team partners Ax and Smash drew the opening two numbers. Whilst today we’ve seen tag partners going at it frequently, when I was a child it was unthinkable. Tag teams were genuine teams back then too, not just two singles guys who have been paired up. It really played up the ‘every man for himself’ aspect of the Rumble. It’s still fun to watch today.
